For most companies it matches the “accounts made up to” dates shown at Companies House. For a company’s first year it starts on the day the company was set up.
If your period is longer than 12 months, tax has to be split into two returns. We cannot do that yet.

Choose Active if the company had any sales, costs or other activity in this period.
Choose Dormant only if nothing happened in this period: no sales, no costs, no money in or out. Even a little bank interest means the company was not dormant.
